7 guidelines for determing your purpose

Still on the fence about what your purpose is in life?  Worried that you have two, or three, even and if you go with one you’ll have to kiss the rest goodbye?

Don’t worry—you’re not alone.  Most of us are in the dark about what our purpose in life is.  In addition, many of us have multiple reasons for being in the universe.  When you’re narrowing down your purpose, or purposes, you can use these criteria for determining if it sounds like you.

It must be idealistic

It’s not unrealistic to strive for the highest and best in life, especially in your life.  Note:  this isn’t perfectionism.  I’ve talked about how obnoxious and distracting perfectionism can be before in the blog, and I still believe that it has no place in anyone’s life.

Instead, use your imagination to see how things could be, or how you should be.  That’s the heart of an entrepreneur:  finding what’s missing in life and how you personally can work to fill that hole

It must be visionary

Don’t get discouraged if your purpose seems impossible, impractical or unrealistic to others.  I’t not their purpose; it’s yours.  It doesn’t have to make sense to others in order for it to come to fruition.  The only person who needs to believe in your dream is you.  It’s your personal mandate to make what is currently a dream into reality.

It must be lifelong

Your purpose in life may change from moment to moment as your life evolves.  It will also grow in vision as you start working towards your vision.  What you initially thought would be a small home based business may eventually go global.

If you keep a mindset of expanding your purpose, it may very well take your entire life to accomplish.

It must benefit everyone

A purpose that is centered on yourself and yourself alone is no purpose.  It is a personal goal.  Once your purpose goes beyond yourself and your ego, it will necessarily benefit others.  Even if your business involves selling a product, you have to have customers to sell to.

It must be challenging

Your purpose must be a continual challenge to your faith and your abilities.  It should also force you to stretch to your highest potential.  Those of you who spent way too many hours feeling brain dead in a gray cubicle know the hell of not being challenged at work.  Don’t let your life’s dream put you back into that position.

It must be worthwhile

Ex-cubicle dwellers, take heed.  Don’t waste any more time on something that’s not worthwhile.  Sure, you will have to do some things in order to pay the bills and keep the lights on.  But if everything you’re doing is just in the name of survival, you need to rethink what you’re doing.

It must set you on fire

Your purpose must fill a legitimate positive need in the world.  If it isn’t worthwhile, it won’t attract the rest of the Universe to help you fulfill it.
